A first Artemisia Gentileschi for Boston

11/10/23 - Acquisition - Boston, Museum of Fine Arts - While Artemisia Gentileschi still does not feature in the Louvre or even in French public collections, major foreign museums are continuing to purchase her works from the French art market. After the National Gallery in London (see the news item of 6/7/18) and the Getty Museum (see the news item of 30/3/21), the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has acquired a small oil on copper by the artist (ill. 1) that was sold in Le Mans in May 2015 under the hammer of Isabelle Aufauvre. Sold for €223,000, the work was snapped up by a private American collector. It was finally acquired from him by the Museum of Boston, through Christie’s New York.
