Un portrait de Van Dyck acquis par un musée de province anglais (Canterbury)
24/4/04 – Acquisition – Canterbury, Royal Museum and Art Gallery – Ce musée anglais vient d’acquérir un portrait d’Anton Van Dyck représentant Sir Basil Dixwell [1] à un prix qui fera rêver plus d’un musée de province français (950 000 £) grâce notamment à la participation de la National Lottery pour 835 000 £. La toile a été achetée sur le marché londonien (Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox). Elle appartenait auparavant à un collectionneur américain.
Sir Basil Dixwell était un membre du Parlement, Sheriff du Kent et riche propriétaire terrien. Il avait fait construire entre 1635 et 1638 un manoir sur le domaine de Broome Park aux environs de Canterbury, aujourd’hui transformé en country club et en terrain de golf.
