Un portrait de Gilbert Stuart offert au Reynolda House Museum

20/3/20 - Acquisition - Winston-Salem (Caroline du Nord), Reynolda House Museum of American Art - Peintre Américain, Gilbert Stuart se forma auprès du portraitiste Cosmo Alexander qu’il accompagna en Ecosse en 1772. Il se rendit ensuite en Angleterre et y vécut de 1775 à 1792. Là, il découvrit l’art de Reynolds, de Romney, de Gainsborough, et devint l’élève de Benjamin West en 1776. Stuart s’imposa comme portraitiste sur la scène artistique anglaise, il exposa à la Royal Academy à partir de 1777 et se fit véritablement remarquer en 1782 pour son Patineur (Portrait de Mr. Grant). Il retourna en Amérique en 1793 où réalisa plusieurs portraits de George Washington.
