A new Monet for Orsay
3/12/23 - Acquisition - Paris, Musée d’Orsay - Acquired by dation (acceptance in lieu), a new painting by Claude Monet joins the reference collection of works by the artist held by the Musée d’Orsay. Remained in private hands since it left Monet’s studio in 1903, On the Cliffs of Dieppe (ill. 1) has remained largely unknown, last exhibited in 1910 at the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris and reproduced in black and white on only two occasions, in the catalogue raisonné of the artist published by Daniel Wildenstein and in the catalogue of the sale organised by the Galerie Charpentier in June 1958, the date on which it joined the private collection that is now disposing of it.
