A Manet and a Cassatt for Atlanta

14/9/23 - Acquisition - Atlanta, The High Museum of Art - She appears in several works by Édouard Manet: Madame Jules Guillemet, born Jeanne Julie Charlotte Besnier de la Pontonnerie, epitomised the Parisian woman of the Belle Epoque. She and her husband ran a fashion boutique on rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The couple were close friends of the painter, and posed for him, notably In the Greenhouse, a painting exhibited at the 1879 Salon, now in the Staatliche Museen in Berlin; in a green setting, Madame is seated on a bench and Monsieur, leaning against the backrest, is standing behind her.
