29/11/23 - Acquisition - Montpellier, Musée Fabre - Charles Gleyre’s Ruth and Booz, preempted by the Musée Fabre for €75,000 (without fees) at the Artcurial sale on 22 November (see the news item of 18/11/23), is both a masterpiece by this artist, whose retrospective was shown in Lausanne in 2006 (see the news item) and at the Musée d’Orsay ten years later (see the news item), and a very important painting for Montpellier because of its links with Frédéric Bazille. Gleyre’s pupils included several of the future Impressionists: Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and, of course, Bazille, who met in his studio in 1862.
