La Tribune de l’Art is an online journal dedicated to art history and heritage. It is not in the habit of launching multiple petitions. But it is also a media outlet committed to the defense of heritage and museums. For this reason, we launched a petition at the end of 2023 against the removal of Viollet-le-Duc’s stained-glass windows from Notre-Dame. That petition remains active and is now accompanied by legal action.
The new whim of the President of the Republic, who wants to lend the Bayeux Tapestry to England against the advice of all the experts, is yet another blow to French heritage. It is not certain this time that a legal challenge will be enough to stop this plan.
After much hesitation, we have therefore decided to launch a second petition. Only a strong public outcry might prevent the implementation of a decision that seriously threatens the integrity of one of the most important masterpieces of humanity.
