A Van Gogh for ’s-Hertogenbosch
24/10/24 - Acquisition - ’s-Hertogenbosch, Noordbrabants Museum - Her nickname, ‘the Mona Lisa of Brabant’ does not work in her favour. Van Gogh’s comparison of this Head of a Woman with the smiling, refined Mona Lisa is a little harsh, especially as the Dutch master himself considered that "a painting of peasants should not smell of perfume [1]". Nevertheless, this painting, done in 1885 when the artist was in North Brabant, is a major work from the beginning of his career.
