A painting by Pietro Ricchi for Venice
2/8/23 - Acquisition - Venice, Museo delle Gallerie dell’Accademia - A painting acquired by the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice brings to mind an artist who is difficult to pin down: Pietro Ricchi, nicknamed "il Lucchese". The work, bought on 16 November 2022 at a Pandolfini sale in Florence, depicts an episode from the Passion: Christ before Caiaphas. After his arrest in the Garden of Olives, Jesus was brought to the high priest of the Temple of Jerusalem, who had gathered the members of the Sanhedrin in his house during the night. False evidence was sought to condemn Christ, and finally Caiaphas asked him if he was the Son of God and tore his clothes, crying out: "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses?" Jesus deserved to die.
