A painting by Bloemaert for the National Gallery

5/1/24 - Acquisition - London, National Gallery - In 2023, the National Gallery in London acquired its very first painting by Abraham Bloemaert. The work had been on long-term loan to the museum for several years, and was finally purchased directly from its owner. This acquisition fills a gap in the collections, in which several of Bloemaert’s pupils are represented, including Jan Baptist Weenix, as well as the Caravaggio painters Hendrick Ter Brugghen and Gerrit van Honthorst. Having thus trained many painters at the turn of the 16th and 17th-centuries, the master is sometimes considered to be the father of the Utrecht School.
