A Cassatt for the Fondation Bemberg
29/11/23 - Acquisition - Toulouse, Fondation Bemberg - This young girl portrayed by Mary Cassatt in 1879 (ill. 1) is inevitably reminiscent of the famous portrait of Berthe Morisot with a bouquet of violets, Édouard Manet’s masterpiece of 1872 (ill. 2). Finally, the colouring, with its opposition of black and white, is another point in common. The portrait of Berthe Morisot is a virtuoso variation of blacks, while that of the young girl plays more on contrast with the white, enhanced by fine hints of gold, the earrings and the pendant cross.
