A Kiss in Nemours: a relief by Desvergnes

30/6/26 - Acquisition - Nemours, Château-Musée – Difficult to compete with Rodin or Brancusi. Yet the greatest sculptors do not hold a monopoly on the kiss, and one Charles Desvergnes did not hesitate to tackle the subject, choosing instead to depict Sapphic love: two nude women embrace, or rather brush against one another, one leaning towards the other, whose languid body emerges from the still rough block of clay (ill. 1). This high relief in terracotta has joined the collections of the Musée-Château de Nemours, directed by Jérôme Fourmanoir, having been presented by the Société des Amis du Vieux Château (Society of the Friends of the Old Castle), chaired by Thierry Zimmer, which purchased it for only €200 hammer at the Rossini sale held in Paris on 21 April 2026.
