Marseille buys a portrait by Dominique Papety
26/9/23 - Acquisition - Marseille, Musée des Beaux-Arts - Born in Marseilles, Dominique Papety suffered a tragic fate: he died at the age of just 34 from cholera, which he contracted during a trip to Greece. His short career was nonetheless fruitful, making him one of Marseilles’s leading artists in the first half of the 19th century, and the first to win the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1836 with The Striking of the Rock, a sketch of which (the second for this museum) was recently acquired by the city’s Musée des Beaux-Arts (see news item of 23/8/21).
