The "Semaine du Dessin" in Paris galleries (5)

22/3/24 - Art market - Paris - This is the fifth and final article in a long marathon that has taken us to all the galleries in Paris (or at least we hope we haven’t missed any) that are holding exhibitions to mark the Semaine du Dessin.

: 1. François Gérard (1770-1837)

Some even mix drawings and paintings. This is the case of a newcomer, Pierre Brost, who is showing a fine group of works at 5 rue Auber until 27 March, including two oils on canvas, one of which is an important painting by François Gérard, The Proclamation of the Duke of Anjou (ill. 1), preparatory to a painting for the Château de Versailles long-term loaned to the Château de Chambord.
Among a number of portraits, including those of the great collector the Comte d’Orsay and his wife, by an artist from the entourage of François-Hubert Drouais, we should mention that of Édouard Colbert de Villacerf (ill. 2) by Hyacinthe Rigaud and another by Nicolas de Largillière depicting an unidentified woman. It should also be noted that a lovely charcoal and pastel study of cats has been acquired by a local authority for a château, a purchase that we shall include in our new database (see article) as soon as it has been finalised.
