A painting by Ignacio Zuloaga acquired by the Spanish State

27/2/26 - Acquisition - Spain - The Spanish State was able to acquire, during its sale, a large painting by Ignacio Zuloaga painted in 1908 and depicting the matador Pepillo, sold for 146 136 euros at the Subastas Segre sale in Madrid on February 10 (the recipient museum is not yet known). It could be the posthumous portrait of Pepe Hillo, a matador killed by a bull in the arena in 1801 — a death staged by Goya in several prints from the series entitled La Tauromaquia. In any case, the painter, to create this painting, used a young model named Matías Costa.
