An Annunciation by Overbeck soon to be on sale at Tajan

7/3/25 - Art Market - Paris - On 27 March, the Tajan auction house will be auctioning an Annunciation by Friedrich Overbeck (ill. 1), undoubtedly the most emblematic painter of German Nazarene painting, considered the leader of this school in Rome, alongside artists such as Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. The work, still on display at the office of the expert Éric Turquin, is of exceptional quality. It is a summary of Nazarene painting, which at the beginning of the 19th century endeavoured to rediscover the purity of the painters of the 15th and early 16th centuries.
As the online notice explains, the painting "proposes a synthesis virtuously blending Gothic and Renaissance elements, drawing as much from the Italian masters as from those of the Northern School".…
