9/6/24 - Acquisition - Dieppe, Château-Musée - It is always possible to make discoveries at Drouot: the Dieppe château-museum has thus purchased [1] a watercolour attributed to an unknown artist, ‘E. Gonzalez", which was sold at Drouot Estimations for 300 euros under the hammer on 15 March 2024 [2]. The attribution had been too quickly deduced from the dedication written at bottom right: ‘Affectionate memory to Madame Haquette, Ev. Gonzalez". But the clue was there! All you had to do was change the last letter to an ‘s’ to identify Éva Gonzalès. A famous painter, a pupil of Manet who was associated with the Impressionists even though, like her master, she never took part in their exhibitions, she died at the age of 34, leaving a small body of work.
