A painting by Willem Key for Leuven
13/2/26 - Acquisition - Belgium, King Baudouin Foundation and Leuven, municipal museum, called "M Museum" - Without a doubt, this was the most beautiful old master painting at BRAFA, as we wrote fifteen days ago in our fair column (see the article): the superb Lamentation by Willem Key (ill. 1) was revealed to visitors, both enthusiasts and specialists who came in large numbers, as every year. Presented in preview, it was acquired through the Charles Vreeken Fund, in collaboration with the King Baudouin Foundation, from Stirum, and will soon be deposited at Louvain. The quality as well as the rarity of this composition fully justify its place in Belgian public collections, given that the Antwerp artist is scarcely represented despite his importance for sixteenth-century Flemish painting,…
