A Kobke for the Metropolitan Museum

9/12/25 - Acquisition - New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art - A major artist of the Danish Golden Age, active in Copenhagen in the first half of the nineteenth century, Christen Købke has appeared in several exhibitions in recent years, notably at the Petit Palais in 2020 (see the article). He had also been the subject of a retrospective in London (see the article). Renowned for his landscapes, he also distinguished himself in the genre of portraiture, depicting above all those close to him: his mother, his many brothers and sisters, notably Adolphine, Valdemar Hjartvar, Conradine, and Sophie; his nephews as well, among them the young Johan Jacob Krohn, who later became a writer and teacher; and not least his wife, Susanna Cecilie, née Krohn.
