20/9/05 - Acquisition - Washington, National Gallery of Art - Peintre de grandes scènes fantastiques aux résonances eschatologiques, John Martin (1789-1854) ne peut que fasciner le spectateur contemporain. Les musées s’arrachent ses compositions et la National Gallery de Washington a acquis l’an dernier, auprès de la galerie Agnew’s de Londres, un tableau de cet artiste, Josué commandant au soleil (ill. 1). Daté de 1816, il est typique de son style grandiose où les éléments déchainés, naturels ou surnaturels, dominent les êtres humains. Datant de 1816, il fut exposé à la Royal Academy où il obtint un grand succès.
