A writer and a painter for the province of Limburg: Erens by Breitner
4/8/26 - Acquisition - Venlo, Limburgs Museum - George Hendrik Breitner’s composition is tightly cropped around the face, while the low viewpoint enhances its dynamism, reinforced by the brisk brushwork and the dark palette, reduced to a range of browns and blacks so as to highlight the two touches of light: the golden tie pin and the reflection in the barely visible spectacles.
This painting brings together two major figures of the Dutch intellectual scene at the end of the nineteenth century: the writer Frans Erens and the painter George Hendrik Breitner. The work was presented by Kunstgalerij Albricht at TEFAF Maastricht and acquired by the Limburgs Museum. It will be included in the museum’s new permanent collection display in 2027.
