A masterpiece by Jean Bourdichon for the Getty
15/7/24 – Acquisition – Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum – When it comes to "national treasures" that have left France, it is sometimes difficult to be pleased to see masterpieces going to prestigious international institutions instead of enriching French public collections, as this notice of 14 June 2019 might have suggested. The Getty was certainly right to bring together these two superb illuminations by Jean Bourdichon, the precious remains of a sixteenth-century royal commission: the Hours of Louis XII, painted in Tours at the beginning of his reign but quickly sent to England and then butchered.
