Death of Denis Coekelberghs
20/4/25 - Obituary - Readers of La Tribune de l’Art were familiar with Denis Coekelberghs, who passed away on 25 February at the age of 85, and who on several occasions had kindly sent us texts, both on François-Joseph Navez and on Flemish Baroque sculpture, two of his areas of expertise.
Born in Brussels, he obtained his doctorate in art history in 1976 from the Catholic University of Louvain, spending a year in Rome in order to complete his thesis on “Belgian Painters in Rome from 1700 to 1830”.
This work led to the exhibition “Around Neoclassicism in Belgium”, held in 1985 at the Musée Communal d’Ixelles and also presented, in a more reduced form, in Paris in one of the now vanished buildings of the former Forum des Halles. We had the good fortune to see it at the time, when…
