A painting by Luis de Morales acquired by the Getty

24/4/25 - Acquisition - Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum - The Getty Museum has just added a work by Spanish Renaissance painter Luis de Morales to its collections. The Californian Hispanic collection, which already boasts several big names – El Greco, Murillo, Valdés Leal, Vicente López, Goya and Sorolla – but is still relatively small, has been expanded with the addition of a renowned new artist. Acquired through the London gallery Daniel Katz, this panel painting of Christ Carrying the Cross made a notable appearance on the German art market a few years ago. Presented as attributed to Luis Morales and his studio with a low estimate of €10,000, it was finally sold for €910,000 (€1.18 million including fees) at Nagel Auktionen in July 2021, when it was identified as an autograph…
