À propos de Raden Saleh, peintre indonésien proche d’Horace Vernet
25/11/21 - Marché de l’art - Paris - Né à Java vers 1811 dans une famille aristocratique, Raden Saleh fut d’abord formé par le peintre Antoine Payen qui séjourna en Indonésie entre 1817 et 1826. Bénéficiant d’une bourse du gouvernement néerlandais, le jeune homme arriva en 1830 à La Haye où il suivit les leçons du portraitiste Cornelis Kruseman puis du paysagiste Andreas Schelfhout. En 1834, il exposa pour la première fois au Salon d’Amsterdam et en 1839 fit un voyage d’étude en Allemagne, notamment à Dresde où il put rencontrer Johann Christian Dahl et exposer au Salon de cette ville, notamment des scènes orientalistes.
En 1845, il arriva à Paris où il put rencontrer Horace Vernet pour lequel il nourrissait une grande admiration et qui l’influença fortement. Sur ses conseils, après…
