Fundraising to restore the Bulliot Virgin

All the versions of this article: English , français

31/8/23 - Fundraising - Autun, Musée Rolin - The hoped-for sum has almost been raised! Last June, a fundraising campaign was launched to finance the restoration of the so-called the Bulliot Virgin (ill. 1 to 3), a Gothic masterpiece from the Musée d’Autun which was on display in the "Miroir du Prince" exhibition (see article) and of which the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine conserves a plaster cast. This is a rare representation, in the early 15th century, of Mary carrying in her arms not a child, but a newborn baby in swaddling clothes. Elegantly dressed, with neither crown nor halo, the sculptor’s first impression is of a mother’s tenderness.
