L’État britannique reçoit en dation Catherine de Médicis
13/5/21 - Acquisition - Twickenham, Strawberry Hill House - Un grand portrait en pied de Catherine de Médicis qui pose avec ses enfants Charles, Henri, Marguerite et le petit François, a fait l’objet d’une dation (Acceptance in lieu) à l’État britannique. Peint en 1561, il est attribué à l’atelier de François Clouet.
On sait que le tableau appartint au XVIIIe siècle à Horace Walpole - fils du premier ministre britannique Robert Walpole - qui l’avait acheté en 1774 au député du comté d’Hertfordshire, Thomas Plumer Byde, qu’il avait peut-être rencontré à la Society for the Promotion of Art, Manufacturing and Commerce.
