A Portuguese Renaissance painting for the Louvre

23/10/23 - Acquisition - Paris, Musée du Louvre - A year ago, the Louvre organised a small but magnificent exhibition devoted to the Portuguese Renaissance (see article). We explained that many works had been lost in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and that France had only one Lusitanian painting from this period, in a church in the Ardèche.

We can therefore only congratulate the Louvre on the superb purchase it has just made from the Parisian (but also Portuguese) dealer Philippe Mendes [1]. The latter presented the work at the 2023…
