A relief by François Du Quesnoy for Boston

7/9/23 - Acquisition - Boston, Museum of Fine Arts - François Du Quesnoy’s plump, chubby putti made his reputation, sometimes to the point of overshadowing the rest of his work, or tarnishing it with numerous replicas and copies that were widely distributed. A relief in the Boston Museum, whose acquisition in 2021 had eluded us, nevertheless bears witness to his talent for depicting these winged infants; the expressions are lively, the postures varied, and the way the artist plays with the thickness of the relief is admirable.
