The Frans Hals Museum buys a painting by Cornelis Van Haarlem

1/9/23 - Acquisition - Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum - This kitchen scene is an exception in the work of Cornelis van Haarlem. Along with Karel Van Mander and Hendrick Goltzius, he was one of the leading figures of Haarlem Mannerism, producing mainly history paintings and portraits. The painting, previously held in a private Swiss collection, was purchased by the Frans Hals Museum, which already owned seventeen paintings by the master, and which had also devoted an exhibition to him in 2012, entitled "The Dutch Michelangelo, Cornelis van Haarlem (1562-1638)"; the title reflects the tenacious tendency to artificially attach the name of a celebrity to that of a lesser-known painter, the better to bait the shopper.
