As part of my PhD in art history, I’m writing a thesis on Rosa Bonheur, a French artist best known for her representations of animals. The aim of my work is to trace the animals that were part of her menagerie, and to understand their roles in the painter’s multiple artistic practices. This is a great opportunity to advance research on an artist who has not yet been the subject of a university thesis.

As the artist’s output has been widely disseminated, many of her works and archives are held in private collections, both in France and abroad. I am looking for any private archives (letters, manuscripts, photographs, invoices, contracts, etc.), French or foreign, on the artist, even simple mentions, as well as works in private hands representing animals (paintings, drawings, sculptures, sketches). I would be extremely grateful to anyone willing to provide me with private documents relating to the artist.
