A masterpiece by Maria van Oosterwyck enters the Rijksmuseum
6/3/25 - Acquisition - Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum - Sometimes you have to be patient, even in museums, and wait for the right painting to emerge instead of falling back on works considered less representative or less successful: this is what the Amsterdam institution has just done, which had been trying for quite some time to acquire a composition by Maria van Oosterwijck but which thus chose to let the one that reappeared four years ago in France pass by (see the news item of 16/3/21), finally letting Toledo get hold of it (see the news item of 11/8/22)! We finally understand the Rijksmuseum, which has just announced the arrival on its walls of a masterpiece (ill.1) by this painter, who is as rare as she is little known to the general public.
