The Metropolitan Museum acquires a masterpiece by Ambrosius Bosschaert

13/11/25 - Acquisition - New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art - This small painting spent some time in France, where it made a notable reappearance on 23 June 2019 at the Hôtel Drouot: Giquello [1] and Fraysse were orchestrating the estate of Madame Michel Binoche, the highlight of which was undoubtedly this still life (ill. 1) by Ambrosius Bosschaert, whose qualities shone through the dirty varnish. Sold for 3,307,716 € including fees, then carefully cleaned, the panel was subsequently offered at TEFAF by the Galerie De Jonckheere, which sold it to a private collection in Virginia, and it was not until 2025 that it could be acquired for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, through the intermediary of the Galerie Adam Williams [2].
