Tefaf : a Chinard for the Virginia Museum of Art
15/3/24 - Acquisition - Richmond, Virginia Museum of Arts - With their sharp eyes and nimble chequebooks, museum curators from all over the world were out in force at Tefaf, as they are every year (see article). Michael R. Taylor, Chief of Conservation, accompanied by the lively Sylvain Cordier, Head of the Department of European Art, filled their bags with a number of masterpieces that will soon be joining the Department of European Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. A terracotta by Joseph Chinard was purchased from the London gallery Stuart Lochhead Sculpture. It is a portrait of Alexis Guiffrey, who was born in Lyon in 1799 and died three years later. His parents François Guiffrey and Victoire Aimée née Caminet wanted to keep the memory of this lost child alive. The commission…
