It is indeed an essential work by a singular artist that has just enriched France's public collections, even though one would initially have imagined it at the Musée de Pont-Aven. Charles Filiger's small gouache on cardboard was naturally the star lot of the sale organised by Thierry-Lannon et Associés on 18 July in Brest, where it fetched €165,000 hammer price — €207,900 including fees — for the benefit of the Musée d'Orsay. Executed at Le Pouldu, this landscape

We had admired it among the gallery of effigies gathered in the final section of the memorable George Daniel de Monfreid retrospective at the Musée Hyacinthe Rigaud in Perpignan (see the article). On loan from a private collection, the Portrait of Victor Segalen depicted one of the artist's close friends, a naval doctor and writer, and a key intermediary between him and Gauguin. The painting is now part of the Musée d'Orsay's collections, having been acquired from Dominique Lelong, a descendant of the sitter. Although several works by the painter are already preserved there — a fine selection of portraits and still lifes, as well as a landscape — none appears to be currently on display, and several

The very recent arrival of Red Scorpionfish and Lemons on the walls of the Paris museum is a significant event in itself. As Jean-Rémi Touzet has written, it is the very first Neo-Impressionist still life to enter the French national collections and the first work by Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange to join the institution whose first director was her granddaughter, Françoise Cachin. Above all, it is an appealing composition (ill. 1), with its brilliant colours, that has joined a Neo-Impressionist gallery dominated by the second man in the painter's life: Signac. One must,

On 15 October 2025, more than seven months ago, we asked the Musée d'Orsay to provide us with, or allow us to consult, the agreement it had concluded with the Qatar museums, regarding the loan by the latter to the Musée d'Orsay of The Desperate Man by Gustave Courbet, acquired without obtaining an export certificate. We described this genuine heritage scandal in two articles, here and there.

Will the museum be visited like the cinema? Sadly, yes, nowadays. In search of novelty, visitors and spectators ask the same question: what are the releases of the week, what are the exhibitions of the season? To choose, one needs an appealing poster, a catchy title and, of course, stars, Tom Cruise or Pierre Niney, Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse... The museum is no longer anything more than a place for temporary exhibitions, and the temporary exhibition a cultural product among others, subject to the same demands of visibility, communication and audience numbers, even profitability. Is it not supposed, however, to stem from scholarly research, to enrich knowledge about a famous artist, to shed light on a lesser-known master?

A large Dalpayrat planter (ill. 1 and 2), together with a large jewellery casket by Henri-Auguste Fourdinois, recently and expensively acquired, justified, according to the Musée d'Orsay, its inaction in the face of the works then dispersed by Jean-Marie Pointu
