Melozzo da Forli in Loreto

The Basilica of Loreto is certainly one of the major religious buildings to see in the Marche region. It houses the House of Nazareth, which legend says was transported by angels from the Holy Land to Italy. This was inserted into a remarkable 16th-century monument, sculpted by some of the best artists of the time, including Andrea Sansovino. There are also Baroque sculptures (notably the funerary monument of Cardinal Bonaccorso Bonaccorsi, by Antonio Raggi), paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, and a large chapel decorated by Cristoforo Roncalli, called Il Pomarancio.
