Drawings and sculptures at Drouot

20/3/24 - Art market - Paris - Two sales of drawings are currently on show at Drouot, at Ader and Millon, as are two previously unseen sculptures by David d’Angers at Daguerre. Finally, as part of the auction house’s "Temps Forts" programme, a large baroque ivory sculpture is on display in the hall, and will be auctioned by De Baecque on 29 March.

So let’s start with the drawings, at Ader, which will be sold on Friday 22 March. Among the very large number of sheets up for auction, we shall particularly note a fine Jean Cousin le fils depicting Jupiter and Semele (ill. 1). Its style, in wash and brown ink, shows how the Fontainebleau school influenced Nicolas Poussin’s early graphic style.

3. Giovanni Francesco Guercino (1591-1666)

Among the Italian drawings we will reproduce two sanguines, one attributed to Cherubino Alberti, a ceiling figure of a nude man (ill. 2), of great strength whatever its author, and the other by Guercino, depicting Saint Augustin Reading in an Interior (ill. 3), whose estimate - no doubt due to a few folds that do not appear in the photograph - seems rather low for a sheet of this quality.
