An early Goya for the Museo del Romanticismo
27/2/24 - Acquisition - Madrid, Museo nacional del Romanticismo - The work has not been allowed to leave Spanish territory since 2014, having been declared an Work of Cultural Interest (BIC). Originally attributed to Francisco Bayeu, this Pietà was attributed back to Francisco de Goya by Arturo Ansón Navarro, who devoted an article to it in Ars Magazine in 2011.
Put up for sale at Abalarte in Madrid on 1 December 2022, it was estimated at three million euros, but failed to find a buyer. It was finally bought by the Spanish state in 2023, and long-term loaned to the Museo nacional del Romanticismo, which celebrates its centenary in 2024. It joins a later work by the master, Saint Gregory the Great, Pope.
