17/10/24 - Acquisition - Sydney, The Art Gallery of New South Wales - A figure that is both dynamic and meditative, Saint François is standing with one foot forward, looking at the crucifix in his hands. His eyes half-closed, his mouth half-open, he contemplates and feels the sufferings of Christ.

This polychrome wooden sculpture is the work of a leading figure in Spanish Baroque: Pedro de Mena (ill. 1). It was purchased by The Art Gallery of New South Wales from the galleries Jorge Coll and Colnaghi London; the latter exhibited it on its stand at Tefaf in 2018 (see article).
