7/3/25 - Acquisition - Paris, Musée du Louvre - Best known for his history paintings, associated with Neoclassicism, Michel-Martin Drölling was also a talented portrait painter, as is vividly demonstrated by a recent acquisition by the Louvre Museum (ill. 1). In this painting, exhibited at FAB Paris by the New York gallery Adam Williams Fine Arts, the artist has captured all the innocence of childhood in his depiction of little Caroline Hayard, then aged six. It was 1816, he was still in Rome, but was already about to return to France, bringing with him several notebooks and drawings, one of which is in the Louvre.
