13/3/25 - Acquisition - Paris, Musée du Louvre - It was undoubtedly one of the finest old master paintings presented at FAB Paris last November (see the article) and it was on the Bayser stand, which was mainly devoted to old master drawings despite their recent association with the Turquin gallery.
This Head of Saint John the Baptist (ill. 1), shows the Saint’s head after the executioner has placed his head on the dish held out by Salome. The subject is a frequent one, particularly in Italian painting, and especially among Neapolitan artists. Of particular note here is the painter’s signature in blood on the edge of the stone base.
