A new Maarten van Heemskerck for Haarlem

12/11/25 - Acquisition - Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum - It has taken its place at the Frans Hals Museum, alongside some of the many works by Maarten van Heemskerck already held there. Acquired from a private collector thanks to the support of the Association Rembrandt (Vereniging Rembrandt), this Genre Scene will be remembered by the fortunate visitors of the remarkable retrospective recently devoted to this great sixteenth-century Dutch artist, between Haarlem and Alkmaar, at the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum and Stedelijk Museum (see the article). It was among the panel of early works assembled and, moreover, among the largely little-known corpus of those executed before Heemskerck became the assistant of Jan van Scorel in Haarlem in 1527.
