A Liotard for Chicago
28/8/23 - Acquisition - Chicago, Art Institute - Noticed at the last TEFAF, where it was exhibited on the stand of the London gallery Lowell Libson & Jonny Yarker, this portrait by Jean-Étienne Liotard (ill. 1) has finally joined the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to a number of drawings, the museum previously possessed only one pastel by the Swiss master, the Portrait of Marthe-Marie Tronchin dated 1758-1761; the artist represented several members of the eminent Tronchin family when he lived in Geneva, his home town, between 1757 and 1772, including Madame Jean Trochin, who also inspired an admirable portrait now in the Louvre.
