A Gauguin for the Van Gogh Museum

27/6/24 - Acquisition - Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum - This masterpiece by Paul Gauguin has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Grand Palais in 2017 (see article) and one at the National Gallery in London in 2019 devoted to portraits (see article). Clovis Asleep was part of the famous collection of Sam Josefowitz, who died in 2015. Christie’s offered several works from this exceptional collection for sale, including this painting, estimated at between £3m and £5m, which didn’t find a buyer on 13 October 2023 in London. It was finally sold by Josefowitz’s heirs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
The museum’s collection evokes various aspects of Gauguin’s production. Effigies bear witness to his - sometimes stormy - friendships, such as his famous self-portrait…
