A drawing by Toussaint Dubreuil for the BnF

21/5/24 - Acquisition - Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France - Several drawings auctioned by Christie’s on 20 March (see news item of 19/3/24) attracted the attention of museums. The sheet attributed to Toussaint Dubreuil, which fetched €7,560 (including costs), was preempted by the Bibliothèque nationale de France with the support of the La Marck Foundation.

Seated in the foreground and equipped with pincers, Vulcan plays the role of repoussoir figure, while in the background the Cyclops are busy in front of the forge (ill. 1). This is probably the preparatory drawing…
