25/11/24 - Paris - Art market and exhibition - There are certain artists who La Tribune de l’Art comes back to often, so often are they in the spotlight. André Devambez is one of them, and we make a point of mentioning him whenever we can, because he is certainly one of the finest rediscoveries of recent years. Even if his name has never disappeared, his sometimes elusive art, oscillating between pure academicism (he was, after all, a Prix de Rome winner and a member of the Institut) and the avant-garde - but an avant-garde of his own that resembles no other - makes him, in a way, unclassifiable.

Nicolas Schwed’s exhibition, in which all his paintings and drawings are on sale, follows on from last year’s retrospective at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and the Petit Palais. It includes a number of works that were already on show, but above all a very large number of previously unpublished works, covering just about every genre Devambez was involved in, from the history paintings he painted at the start of his career - note, for example, the impressive preparatory cartoon for his painting aint Jean de Capistran, to Mortify Himself, Walking through the Streets of Perugia on a Donkey and in Ridiculous Clothes (ill. 1) - to landscapes, from the droll illustration of fairy tales (Gulliver - ill. 2) to portraits.
