A chandelier by Viollet-le-Duc acquired by Philadelphia

20/3/25 - Acquisition - Philadelphia, Museum of Art - At the beginning of March, the Oscar Graf gallery announced the acquisition by the Philadelphia Museum of Art of a large neo-Gothic candlestick by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (ill. 1 to 3). The sale saw the Parisian gallery join forces with the English dealer Paul Shutler who, as the provenance of the work, well documented by the gallery notices, makes clear [1] had acquired it in 2023 on the Belgian art market which it had just joined. It had remained in private Belgian hands since the 1960s, when it left its intended building, the chapel of the Collège Saint-François-Xavier in Vannes, where it had been on display since 1876.
