A drawing by La Fosse for Lille

30/11/23 - Acquisition - Lille, Palais des Beaux-Arts - A late painting by Charles de La Fosse, The Handing over of the Keys to Saint Peter is kept at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. It was recently joined by a preparatory drawing, which sold for €7,872 at Artcurial on 22 November, acquired with the help of the Friends of the museum (ill. 1 and 2).
Originally attributed to Pierre Bergaigne, the painting was returned by Arnauld Brejon de Lavergnée to La Fosse, who painted it around 1700 for the high altar of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre in Lille. The Palais des Beaux-Arts also owns a Saint Cecilia by Arnould de Vuez that was painted in this church.
